One Day for Human Rights
This year, on December 10, we are celebrating the Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). That’s the good news.
The bad news is that less than five percent of the world’s population even knows that its thirty meaningful articles exist. As a starting point for getting this document in the hands of all people, we created a campaign, One Day for Human Rights, in which we urge you to support the UDHR, by writing an article about Human Rights issues on your blog, post about it in a podcast, videocast, sign the petition to ask your government to print the UDHR in your nation’s passports, or create anything in support of human rights issues.
In the last century alone over 150 million people have been killed by governments. If this century is to be safer, we all need to know the rules and the role of law. By the year 2010, 42% of the world will be under 21. Half of Haiti is currently under 16; 60% of Iran’s population is under 25; half of Africa is under 21. A youthful world is coming and a common vision for a better world needs to be set now.
Information is power! By printing the UDHR in the passports of our country, we can change the world. The more we educate people about their rights, the better they can defend themselves. Help us to get everyone their Passport to Human Rights. I ask you to begin petitions in your communities to get the UDHR printed on your passports. As the Chinese proverb goes, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” This petition is our first step in creating a world where the rights of all people are understood and respected.
Now is the time to focus on the UDHR and empower the world’s population to evoke the vision of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and to make these historic changes. We are counting on your support! Knowledge is the key to empowerment. This knowledge can be available via passports and the world must acknowledge this opportunity to make a difference.
